Inn At Ferry Landing
A restored 1840 farmhouse at the end of a quiet road on the water, under Maine's only remaining 1939 suspension bridge. Jean and Gerald Wheeler have been welcoming guests here for years — Jean cooks, Gerald plays classical piano in the living room. Some inns are just lodging. This one is something else.
The Inn at Ferry Landing sits at Scott's Landing, the site of the old Eggemoggin ferry crossing on the north end of Deer Isle. The property connects to early island history — Major William Eaton owned land here before 1784, and the Eatons built nearby in 1762. The 1840 white farmhouse that serves as the inn today was photographed in the 1940s essentially as it stands now.
Jean Wheeler grew up in Bellport, Long Island, lived in Vail and Atlanta before settling here. She's a sailor and photographer, and the breakfast she puts out in the morning — blueberry muffins, local produce, something from the island — is one of the real reasons people return. Gerald Wheeler is a professional organist and pianist; guests have reported coming downstairs to find him playing in the living room.
Three guest rooms in the main house each have a private bath and water view. There's also The Mooring, a 2-bedroom attached cottage with separate entrances and full amenities, good for families or couples traveling together.
The view from here is Eggemoggin Reach — the tidal passage that inspired songwriter Dan Fogelberg. Sailboats run through it regularly. The suspension bridge is visible from the property. Loons, eagles, and the changing light on the water are part of the daily background.
Nearby: Acadia's Isle au Haut section is accessible from Stonington, the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is a short drive, and Blue Hill, Castine, and Brooklin are all within range for day trips.
What Visitors Say
""Mama Jean's" knowledge and recommendations of business and locations to visit in Deer Isle, Stonington, and surrounding cities absolutely cannot be beat. With an encyclopedic knowledge and often firsthand friendship with the business owners, she knows a place for everything you can think of. Don't forget Gerald, a literal world traveling organist. The location is just stunning, and the food will have you never going back to order the same thing at a restaurant. It's a beautiful, quaint little building with a super cozy atmosphere."
"Jean and Gerald are two of the sweetest people I've ever met. My family and I were blessed enough to spend two weeks in The Mooring which is an absolutely perfect place to wake up each morning. I can't say enough how greatful we are for our experience and the chance to get to know Jean and Gerald a little during our stay. The Mooring is family friendly, but would also make the PERFECT place to spend a romantic honeymoon or couples getaway. If you need a place for your next vacation you can do no better than the Inn at Ferry Landing."
"All you want and need is here. The best friendly Inn keepers in the whole of Maine. Very international. .9nce to come here you will always come back. The rooms are one better than the other. Clean and absolutely great. Ocean right in front and awesome sunsets. A must visit if you happen to be up north of Maine.."

- The bridge and the reach are worth exploring on foot — the road is quiet and the view upstream is exceptional.
