Boyce's Motel

Stonington, Maine 4.8 (62)
The oldest motel in Stonington — and still the best value on the harbor. Three generations, silver-shingled buildings, flower boxes, and a private deck where you can watch lobster boats come and go. Barrett Gray's great-grandfather bought this building in 1920. Some things don't need to change.

The building at 44 Main Street has worn many identities. Theodore Boyce bought the early 19th-century block frame house in 1920, and over the decades it served as a grocery store for thirty years, a dress shop, and even the Stonington Public Library. In 1961, Mae Boyce and her son George, along with his wife Barbara, opened Boyce's Motel. The silver-shingled motel you see today is still run by Barrett Gray — the third generation — who lives in the adjacent historic house where his mother grew up.

The property sits at the top of Main Street, directly across from the harbor. The private deck looks down on the working waterfront: lobster boats heading out before dawn, seiners at the co-op dock, the mail boat to Isle au Haut. You don't have to seek out Stonington's character here; it comes to you.

Rooms are clean, practical, and non-smoking — private bath, cable TV, Wi-Fi, refrigerator, in-room coffee. The largest unit is a full apartment with two bedrooms, a complete kitchen, washer/dryer, and a private deck. From $85 a night, it's one of the more honest values in Hancock County. Barrett is known for going above and beyond — guests have come home to a lobster dinner waiting.

What Visitors Say

"This has got to be one of the most charming places I've ever stayed! My room was well appointed and exactly what I needed with a great view and convenient location. Locally owned and operated, it stands out as exceptional if for no other reason than that! It has the bed & breakfast feel without the b&b stuffiness you can sometimes run into. Barrett is the quintessential Inn owner who is both charming and informative with an island knowledge like that of tour guide who is happy to spill the local's favorite places. March-December there is no street parking, but there is always off street available thats easily manageable. During the winter, sidewalks are kept clean and salted and it seems like everyone is happy to attach a plow to their pickups and and plow a parking lot or two. Boyce's and the Town of Stonington are every bit worth the adventure and drive! From watching the lobster boats in the harbor to the many shops and restaurants, there is something for everyone to enjoy even at an off time of year. Boyce's should definitely be on your list to check out!"

"The Motel (Cottage) was neat and very clean. There was information about the island which provided informative information on activities, food, and motel policies. This was a last minute overnight stay for us and I'm glad we stayed here. The Owner/Manager was great and was easy to work with. Thank you for a great experience"
