Sixteen flavors of ice cream, a lobster roll made with fresh lobster from the local co-op, and a deck overlooking Stonington Harbor — all at 66 Main Street, next door to gWatson Gallery. Open 11am to 8pm daily in season.
Ron Watson runs Stonington Ice Cream Company from a spot that has the harbor directly in front of it and a gallery next door. The ice cream is the name on the door, but the food operation is more serious than the name implies: lobster rolls use fresh lobster from the Stonington co-op, smoked haddock and crabmeat come from Stonington suppliers, and the menu extends to quiche, summer soups, salads, and baked goods alongside the sixteen ice cream flavors.
The deck is the reason to linger. Stonington Harbor from this vantage point — the lobster boats, the islands in the distance, the working waterfront character of the town — is one of the better free views on the island. Getting a lobster roll and eating it on the deck while the harbor does its thing is a low-cost, high-return way to spend an afternoon.
It's also just ice cream if that's all you want. The ice cream doesn't need the lobster context to justify itself.

"We always cross our fingers and hope the Stonington Ice Cream Company is open when we visit Deer Isle in late spring. Their lobster rolls are our favorite, anywhere. The freshly toasted bun is heaped with sweet, very fresh lobster, with slices of scallion and a little tarragon (fennel?) in the light mayo dressing. It is exceptionally good and worth every dollar of its $25 price tag."
