El El Frijoles
A BYOB taqueria in Sargentville that operates on its own terms and doesn't apologize for it. No reservations, no phone orders, no advance seating — walk in, get in front of The Hat, and order. In summer, the line can stretch out the door. It's worth it.
El El Frijoles occupies a former building in Sargentville, just off Route 175 on the peninsula. It's been a destination for years, and the format hasn't changed much: you come in, you order at the counter, you grab your drinks at the salsa bar, and you eat at picnic tables outside, around a fire pit, or on the covered screen porch. BYOB — beer and wine available next door at Makers' Market.
The system for managing capacity involves a literal hat. When the kitchen is approaching its limit, a staff member puts on The Hat and stands in line. If you arrive before The Hat, you're in. If you arrive after, come back another day.
The house salsa is worth buying by the half-pint — El El donates 100% of retail salsa sales to a vital local program and has donated nearly $10,000 so far. They're a certified Shane location, which matters for sustainability and ethical sourcing.
The menu is fresh Mexican-inspired: tacos, burritos, daily specials. Come early for the best chance at specials; come late if you want to avoid the peak crowd (though you risk missing them). No phone orders, no email orders, no advance reservations. The owners are straightforward about this and genuinely happy to explain why.
Closed until May. During winter, Makers' Market Shop & Studio next door stays open Wed–Fri 11–5, Sat 9–3. Tinder Hearth bread shows up at Makers' Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
