Burnt Cove Market
The main grocery store for Stonington and the surrounding area, owned and operated by the Island Employee Cooperative. Full service means full service: deli, bakery, hot food on steam tables, fresh produce, a walk-in beer cave, full-service gas, and a bottle redemption center — all in one place, year-round.
Burnt Cove Market is part of the Island Employee Cooperative (IEC) — the same worker-owned co-op that runs The Galley in north Deer Isle. The IEC model means the people running the register and slicing deli meat have a stake in the place.
For an island community of this size, the market does an impressive amount: a produce section with organic options and — for a short window in summer — native strawberries and blueberries that go fast; a meat department with custom cuts and special orders; a deli running hot food on steam tables Monday through Saturday alongside made-to-order sandwiches, pizza by the slice, and fried chicken; and a bakery turning out fresh muffins, bread, and cookies daily.
The beer cave is customer-accessible — a walk-in cooler stocked with cold beer. They carry wine and spirits in serious depth. Full-service gas runs 9am–5pm daily. They're also a Blue Rhino propane exchange station, a lottery machine operator, and a bottle redemption center with modern equipment.
Grocery delivery runs Mondays — call the store.
