Weir Island
A small state-owned island just off Sand Beach with a Maine Island Trail campsite — paddle over, pitch a tent, and sleep with clear views of Isle au Haut and the outer islands.
Weir Island sits a short kayak paddle from Sand Beach in Stonington. It's part of the Maine Island Trail — a 375-mile water trail of islands along the coast available for low-impact recreation. The island has a designated campsite, making it one of the more accessible island camping options in the Stonington archipelago.
The appeal is the proximity. You don't need to plan a multi-day expedition — launch from Sand Beach, paddle out, set up camp, and you're sleeping on an island in Penobscot Bay. The views toward Isle au Haut and the outer islands are expansive. On a clear night, the stars are remarkable.
It's a small island, so the camping is primitive: bring everything, carry everything out. Maine Island Trail Association membership is encouraged (and required for some islands in the system), and Leave No Trace principles apply strictly.
What Visitors Say
"What an amazing island. It's incredible. Almost covered at high tide and a beautiful sandy beach during low tide. The owner was there with his wife when we went and they are just so kind. This is magical. Thank you!!!"
"We really like going on the beach. Thank you for letting us on your Beach or your Island love it"
