Steep Bank Beach
Deer Isle, Maine
A quiet family beach on Deer Isle with picnic tables, charcoal grills, and climbable rocks — the kind of spot locals know but visitors rarely find.

Steep Bank Beach sits on the western shore of Deer Isle, a small municipal beach with a sandy stretch and scattered granite. At low tide a sandbar extends out, giving kids more room to wade and explore. The water is cold — this is Maine — but on a warm July day it's swimmable.
What makes it appealing is the infrastructure: picnic tables, charcoal grills, and enough space to spend a few hours without feeling crowded. The rocks around the edges are good for climbing and tide pool poking. It's not Sand Beach (the island's flagship), but it's quieter and has more amenities for a proper beach day with a family.
Local Tips
- Check the tide — the sandbar and best wading are at low tide
- Bring charcoal if you want to grill; tables and grills are there but not supplies
- Less crowded than Sand Beach, especially on weekends
- The road in is easy to miss; look for the small sign
Connected To
- Sand Beach — the island's main beach, about 15 minutes south toward Stonington
- Lily Pond Park — if you want freshwater swimming instead
