Mariners Memorial Park
A 23-acre park on Long Cove owned by the Evergreen Garden Club and protected by an IHT conservation easement — a meadow, a tidal shore, a granite monument to local fishermen lost at sea, and a Bicentennial Tree planted in 1962. Quiet, well-maintained, and often overlooked.
Mariners Memorial Park is unlike the IHT preserves surrounding it: it's not a wilderness trail system but a community memorial space with a park sensibility. The land was originally part of Morey Farm, transferred to the Evergreen Garden Club in 1961. The club has maintained it since, adding the memorial granite monument, 654 donated plants, and the features that give the park its character.
The park has a 0.7-mile trail network with two named routes: Memory Lane (to the left of the entrance, through shrubby bird-attracting habitat) and Mariners' Mile (a 1-mile loop encircling the full property). A tidal boat launch gives canoes and kayaks access to Long Cove — check the tide before you go, as mudflats can strand you at low water. The shoreline also offers clam digger access.
The granite monument commemorates local fishermen lost at sea — a grounded acknowledgment in a community where commercial fishing has always carried real risk. The Bicentennial Tree was planted in 1962 and remains a landmark on the property. Picnic tables and benches are scattered throughout.
IHT holds the conservation easement and includes the park in its letterboxing trail across preserves — an IHT Passport stamp is located on the property.
