Jill Hoy Art Gallery
Jill Hoy has been painting Stonington, Deer Isle, and the Maine coast in oil for decades, with work in the Portland Museum of Art and Harvard Business School collections. Her gallery is at 80 Main Street in Stonington — open during the season — and she shows actively in Portland, New York, and beyond.
Hoy earned her BFA from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and studied at the New York Academy of Art. She divides her time between Stonington, Somerville (Massachusetts), and New York, producing Maine paintings from direct plein air observation alongside studio works built from memory and imagination.
Her paintings focus on what she calls "crystal-clear light" — the particular quality of coastal light on Deer Isle, Stonington Harbor, gardens, and architectural detail. Saturated color and strong pattern run through the work, whether she's painting a specific cove view or working in a more symbolic mode in the studio. She works primarily in oil, with recent watercolor exploration alongside.
The gallery at 80 Main Street has operated for over 22 years. Hoy shows regularly at Portland Art Gallery (she assembled a show there in October 2025 with 18 paintings of Stonington, Deer Isle, Cape Elizabeth, and Brooksville), and at the Courthouse Gallery in Ellsworth. A solo show — Narratives of Form & Color — opened in October 2025 at Perry Lawson Fine Art in Nyack, New York. Her work has appeared in LL Bean catalogues, Down East magazine, and books by Carl Little.

What Visitors Say
"Jill is the real deal, and her gallery shows off her work comfortably. We spent quite a lot of time here, looking at almost everything. They were very nice to us, just as they welcomed warmly the casual tourists who had no interest in buying. . I particularly recommend that you visit this gallery at the beginning of your vacation in the area, as looking at Jill's art is excellent preparation for seeing new details in the areas natural landscape."
