Edgar M. Tennis Preserve

Deer Isle, Maine 4.8 (83)
The best hike on Deer Isle, by most accounts. A 3.4-mile trail system through two old farm properties — the Davis and Pickering farms — along a coastal shore with a pocket beach and views of the islands. Eider ducks raft offshore in winter. The preserve has been here since 1972 and still feels like a discovery.

Edgar M. Tennis Preserve is owned by the State of Maine and managed by Island Heritage Trust — an arrangement that dates back to 1972, when Dr. Edgar M. Tennis gave approximately 100 acres to the state with a specific wish: that the land he loved be made available to the public, its natural beauty preserved, and that it remain "Forever Wild." His daughter later donated an additional 15 acres and, in 1996, 30 more. Both additions are protected by IHT conservation easements.

The 145-acre preserve encompasses two old farms on the west and east sides: the Davis Farm and Pickering Farm. The trail system passes evidence of both — the forest changes character across different sections, reflecting how the land was used by its past inhabitants. Before the farmers, Wabanaki people camped along these shores for up to 3,000 years, most likely wintering here where strong tidal currents and fertile sea provided fish and shellfish. The farmhouse the Tennis family eventually purchased had, in the early 20th century, been owned by the artist Chase Emerson, for whom the Deer Isle library is named.

The shore trail passes a small pocket beach with ocean and island views. In winter, Common Eider ducks raft offshore in flocks that ecologist Dr. Ken Crowell calls "one of the wildlife wonders of the world." The trail has its challenges — shallow, fragile soils mean exposed roots and sometimes soggy footing — but the reward is proportionate.

Directions: south on ME-15 past Deer Isle village, left on Sunshine Road (across from Mill Pond Irving), 2.5 miles, right on Tennis Road to its end. Four small parking areas on both sides of the road as you enter the preserve.

What Visitors Say

"A great place for an easy hike that passes between woods and the seashore. Highly recommend if you have some free time in Stonington ME."

"We hiked the preserve on 3-22-21. The trails were in good shape, with lots of roots, but only a few spots of ice here and there,so no need for grippers. Absolutely gorgeous views all along the shore. Plenty of spots to hike down by the shore. One of our favorites!"

"Great little spot with a couple of different paths you can take. Rather hiking in the forest or meandering along the rocky shoreline, great to be out and enjoying nature. There are about 6-9 parking spots, but doesn't seem to be too busy. The trails are nice, however be ready for rock steps and tree roots more of the way :). Not too different then most paths in ME."

Local Tips

  • Limited parking in four small areas — do not park in the road; the fragile soils along the roadsides are part of what you came to see.
  • The trail to the pocket beach involves roots and uneven terrain; good footwear matters.
  • Winter visit: the eider rafts offshore are worth bundling up for. Bring binoculars.
  • IHT offers a downloadable virtual guided walk through the preserve — useful for understanding what you're looking at before or after.
  • Day use only — no camping, no fires, foot traffic only.
